The map shows Germany at the height of the Cold War. Map of Germany at the height of the Cold War. West Germany is shaded orange
Juliette [100K]

Berlin was divided just as Germany was divided.

Explanation:

After the World War II ended, Germany was totally destroyed. The Allied forces didn't just left things like that, but instead they divided Germany into zones of influence. Germany was roughly divided into two parts, West Germany and East Germany. West Germany was further divided into zones of influence to the United States, United Kingdom, and France, while East Germany was under the control of the Soviet Union. The two parts of Germany had totally different developments throughout the Cold War period.

  • West Germany was helped to reestablish its industry and it rapidly developed.
  • West Germany became a democracy and it had a market economy.
  • East Germany was controlled by the communists, so its development was slow and there were lot of problems.
  • The economy was a command economy, which resulted in the people living in bad conditions and being very poor.
  • It was not just that the country was divided into two totally opposite parts, but also the capital, Berlin, had a wall built through it, and it was divided in the same manner as the rest of Germany, with the people not being allowed to move from one part to another.
