As part of Nixon's southern strategy, he gave a nationally televised address attacking Hubert Humphrey, the Democrat candidate.

In US politics, the Southern Strategy refers to the strategy put in place by the Republican Party to seduce the white electorate of the South of the United States who traditionally voted the Democratic Party.

This was the main strategy of Richard Nixon's campaign during the 1968 US presidential election.
