Answer:

1. b. students,

2. c. .

3.  b. .

4. c. ?

5. a. Ted and Janice, who had been friends for years, went on vacation together every summer.

6. a. everybody’s surprise

7. a. short story, “The Tell-Tale Heart,”

8. d. but-an eyesore

9. b. “sale,”

10. c. “Leinengen versus the Ants,”

Explanation:

1. All of the people at the school, including the teachers and <u>b. students, </u>were glad when summer break came.

The use of "students," ends the dependent clause.

2. Sit up straight <u>c. .</u>

The sentence is a simple statement so ends with a full-stop.

3. They asked what time the department store would open <u>b. .</u>

It is a simple statement so ends with a full-stop.

4. Who do you think will win the contest <u>c. ?</u>

A question, so ends with a question mark.

5. Choose the sentence below with the correct punctuation.

<u>a. Ted and Janice, who had been friends for years, went on vacation together every summer.</u>

The use of the comma before and after the dependent clause provides an added information to Ted and Janice.

6. To <u>a. everybody’s surprise</u>, Anne was on time for her math class.

Everybody is already a plural, so the apostrophe comes before the "s".

7. In Edgar Allen Poe’s <u>a. short story, “The Tell-Tale Heart,”</u> Edgar Allen Poe describes a man with a guilty conscience.

The name of the short story must be written within quotation marks, and the use of the "," after "short story" provides an introduction or detail of the work that is talked about.

8. Billboards are considered an important part of advertising for big business,<u> d. but-an eyesore</u> by their critics.

The use of "-" shows the connection of the two words in the sentence.

9. I can never remember how to use those two common words, “sell,” meaning to trade a product for money, or <u>b. “sale,”</u> meaning an event where products are traded for less money than usual.

Putting the word "sale" in between quotation marks provides the same intention of the specific word that is dealt with.

10. The class just finished reading <u>c. “Leinengen versus the Ants,”</u> a short story by Carl Stephenson about a plantation owner’s battle with army ants.

Names of books are to be put within quotation marks/ inverted commas.

<span> a. The opposers would spook the elephants so that they would stampede backward over the advancing army.

The Romans used lots of different tactics against the War Elephants that Hannibal used. These include, but are not limited to:

- Use of spikes: These can be made from wooden or other materials. They are made so that the pointed side is facing upwards, and would skewer the elephant's foot when it stepped on it, leading to stampede, and later disorder of the army.
- Land: The Romans, after they found out how Hannibal's plan, used a different approach, such as choosing lands that are easier to defend against the elephants, as well as maintaining strategic points to easily deflect war elephant attacks.

These are just a few other ways that the Romans used to defeat Hannibals war elephants.

alexandr1967 [171]

Answer:

an army

Explanation:

The text above states that the "host" made a horrible noise and had a strong step that raised a lot of dust. This gives us the impression that the "host" is not a single person, but a large number of people, a crowd, which can indicate that this word refers to an army. Which makes perfect sense, since the word "host" used to be used to refer to an army.

The poem songs of spavinaw
timurjin [86]

<u>Explanation:</u>

The poem "songs of Spavinaw" by Ruth Muskrat Bronson reads;

Stanza one

<em> "I am the river of Spavinaw, </em>

<em>    I am the river of pain; </em>

<em> Sadness and gladness must answer my law; </em>

<em> Measure for measure I give, and withdraw  </em>

<em>Back through the hills of the Spavinaw, </em>

<em>Hiding away from the plain."</em>

Stanza Two<em> </em>

<em>"I am the river of Spavinaw; </em>

<em>   I sing the songs of the world; </em>

<em>Dashing and whirling, swishing and swirling, </em>

<em> Delicate, mystical, silvery spray hurling, </em>

<em> Sing I the songs of the world, </em>

<em> The passionate songs of the world.</em>

<em>I sing of laughter and mirth, "</em>

Stanza Three

<em>     "And I laugh in a gurgle of glee </em>

<em> As the myriad joys of the earth </em>

<em> Trip through the light with me. </em>

<em>Gay shallows dimple, sparkle and ripple. </em>

<em> Like songs that a lover would sing, </em>

<em> Skipping in moonlight, </em>

<em>Tripping in moonlight, </em>

<em>Whispering echoes of spring."</em>

Stanza Four

<em>"And again </em>

<em> I move with the slow sadness of pain. </em>

<em> In my dark blue deep, where the shadows creep, </em>

<em> I catch up life’s sorrows and mirror them back again. </em>

<em>And my song is a throbbing, pitiful sobbing, </em>

<em> Choked by an agonized pain."</em>

Stanza Five

<em>"And then </em>

<em>  I move forth toward the beckoning north, </em>

<em>  And I sing of the power of men. </em>

<em> As I dash down my falls, </em>

<em>    As I beat at my walls </em>

<em> Frantically fighting, running and righting, </em>

<em> All through the flood, through the snarling and biting, </em>

<em> I sing of the power of men, </em>

<em> Of the hurry and power of men."</em>

Stanza Six

<em>"I am the river of Spavinaw, </em>

<em>  I am the giver of pain; </em>

<em> Sadness and gladness must answer my law; </em>

<em> Measure for measure I give, and withdraw </em>

<em>Back through the hills of the Spavinaw, </em>

<em> Hiding away from the plain."</em>
