Harry S Trumans decision came after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Japan. Truman warned Japan if they didn't surrender, there would be dire consequences to face. Japan did not surrender, and the atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945. Truman felt this acton was the best way to end the war and spare American lives.
