Because the people of Kansas were allowed to vote whether the new state should be slave or free.This focused a lot of attention on Kansas, and terrorists from <span>both sides crossed into the state to interfere with the voting.</span>
The newly opened territory of Kansas became a battleground for the issue of slavery because there were to forms of government in the state that contradict each other. One faction supported slavery and the other faction was against slavery. People from the Southern states had supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act because they favored slavery. The act allowed the possibility of spreading slavery into new places. Tensions grew between people and it derivated in conflicts and violence, such as the "Bleeding Kansas" moments.
