Explanation:

The Cuban missile crisis of 1962 is the closest the US and the USSR, and the world with them, came to nuclear war. For the US, the threat of having Soviet nuclear missiles fully operational just less than one hundred miles from the coasts of Florida was utterly unacceptable. After the discovery of the missile site in Cuba, the Kennedy administration issued a serious warning to the Soviet Union and Cuba. Fortunately, a deal was reached between the White House and the Kremlin, and the Soviet top leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to withdraw the missiles and nuclear bombers from Cuba. The international stature and image of president JFK  were elevated by the affair.
