Douglas MacArthur lead an offensive wave that found its limits in the Philippines, were Japanese forces confronted him winning the control of the zone. MacArthur defended Corregidor fortress but his escenario was unfavorable. So, he received orders to leave his around ninety thousand soldiers defending Corregidor. Nevertheless he promised to come back and help them, however he didn't receive the support he believed he was going to get from the Australian Allies. However, he eventually got heard and U.S. forces went back to the Philippines and won that territory over the Japaneses and liberated the Islands.
