Why was the Byzantine Empire able to survive 1000 years after the fall of Western Rome?

One factor is that Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine empire, had a wall around it which made it impervious to invaders. Since the wall was so impervious the economy and culture of the byzantine empire was able to stay around fro 1000 years.
