People of middle ages mostly believed in the concept of heaven and hell an the catholic churches were the center of belief. All activities of the middle age people revolved around the church activities. Catholic churches  put forth the belief that people can only go to heaven when they abide by the conventions of the catholic church.

Most of the people donated ten percent of  their land to the church. There was existence of feudal system and many feudal lords gave off lands to the churches as a mark of devotion. Parishioners were often had to pay for ceremonies like baptisms. Many parish priests were illiterates and this urged them to rely on the church to interpret the biblical texts. They gained literacy from the church.
