I would always get confused with negative reinforcement and punishment. They kind of sound like they should mean the same thing. In fact they don't! Negative reinforcer means something is taken away to encourage a behavior. This was an example that my psych teacher would give us if we were confused: if a mouse is part of an experiment that it will be continually shocked until it clicks a button. Once the mouse clicks the button the shock is TAKEN AWAY, therefore being negative reinforcement. Punishment is when something is done to try and stop a behavior
