History

The feudal system developed in Europe around the 9th century. It was an economic system that was based on a series of concessions between 4 classes.

 • The Nobility (The King and his family).
 • The Barons
 • The Knights
 • The Peasants

Peasants were granted a parcel of land by knights in exchange for their work. At the same time, knights were granted a piece of land by the barons in exchange for protection. Barons were a sort of "administrators" who managed lands who were granted by the King. The latter had the power to withdraw the land from the barons if he considered he was not managing the land well.

This system, considering the political changes involved, like the shift from monarchies to democracies, would later evolve into what is now modern-day capitalism. Individuals who concentrated the most wealth would employ labor in order to keep growing their funds.

How did shifting workforce demographics contribute to the dramatic changes that occurred in the US labor force and industry duri
Airida [17]

Thesis: The US labor force changed greatly toward a job market mostly made of women during the second world war, but then greatly changed back to a male-dominated labor force just shortly after the second world war.

At the start of World War II, women made on like a quarter of the workforce, as most had to stay home to continue tending their children and maintaining their home. Even though many people kept from having children because of the Great Depression not just recently passing, and many people still couldn't afford maintaining a family, many women still stayed at home instead of signing up in the war because they felt that was the way things should be.

If you were the King of England, how would you keep colonists from moving too far west into the backcountry?
Sonja [21]

Answer:The TREATY OF PARIS, which marked the end of the French and Indian War, granted Britain a great deal of valuable North American land. But the new land also gave rise to a plethora of problems.

The ceded territory, known as the Ohio Valley, was marked by the APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS in the east and the Mississippi River in the west.

Don't Go West, Young Man

Despite the acquisition of this large swath of land, the British tried to discourage American colonists from settling in it. The British already had difficulty administering the settled areas east of the Appalachians. Americans moving west would stretch British administrative resources thin.

Further, just because the French government had yielded this territory to Britain did not mean the Ohio Valley's French inhabitants would readily give up their claims to land or trade routes. Scattered pockets of French settlers made the British fearful of another prolonged conflict. The war had dragged on long enough, and the British public was weary of footing the bill.

Daniel Boone painting

George C. Bingham

Even after Britain issued the Royal Proclamation of 1763, Daniel Boone continued to settle areas west of the Appalachian Mountains. This 1851 painting, Daniel Boone Leading Settlers through the Cumberland Gap, depicts the popular image of a confident Boone leading the early pioneers fearlessly into the West.

Moreover, the Native Americans, who had allied themselves with the French during the Seven Years' War, continued to fight after the peace had been reached. Pontiac's Rebellion continued after the imperial powers achieved a ceasefire.

The last thing the British government wanted were hordes of American colonists crossing the Appalachians fueling French and Native American resentment.

The solution seemed simple. The ROYAL PROCLAMATION OF 1763 was issued, which declared the boundaries of settlement for inhabitants of the 13 colonies to be Appalachia.
