The purpose the story was is to highlight to the readers that young people are the ones who are most responsible for bringing the change in the world. The conflict arises when Neto wanted to continue playing for his school even though he learnt from Jesse that few of the children said bad about him. Neto refused to believe Jesse. He takes his stand even when he is not supported by his coach and others.

The above excerpt shows a situation where the protagonist, a grandson, was preparing to be a player of the school team, but he learned from his friend that some members of the team did not want his presence on the team, because of his appearance and that stimulated racist comments and thoughts. Neto is a little shaken, but decides to face racism and do what was in his heart.

This is a conflict known as "character versus society" that occurs when the character needs to face a population or a group within the population that is contrary to him in some way.
