Frederick had been a slave at the plantation where the owner who was cruel saw him as a liability. He was later lent to another slave master popular for “breaking” slaves. With both slave masters, Frederick was beaten and sustained injuries though the last master severely beat him to a point where he felt broken.

While working at the plantation he forged passes pretending to be the slave master to grant permission to leave the plantation with the aim of celebrating Easter holiday. The plan didn't go through since someone snitched on them.
