The red sea represents a rift zone where the two tectonic plates spread from the centers. That is the African and the Arabian plate. It forms an extension of the dead sea transform fault system.
Magnetic anomalies suggest that this plate spreads at a rate of 1 cm/year. And is followed by a major seafloor spreading and the rift zone includes a basaltic strata volcano located at the northwest passage of the red sea.
