Her fight was for women, for them to be given the right to vote and most importantly, for them to be treated as the citizens of the United States.

Women hardly had any legal rights. Anthony had made a bold move of casting her vote during the 1872 presidential election for which she was arrested, tried and fined. It’s after this incident that she wrote this speech. Her sole purpose was to prove that women were citizens too and had the right to vote.
