Problem 1

2x² = 200

/2        /2     divide both sides by 2

x² = 100

√ √ get square root of both sides

x = + or - 10

Problem 2  easier to factor

x² - 4x -5

what times to -5 and adds to -4? -5 and 1

(x-5) (x+1) = 0

x = 5 and -1

Problem 3 Is a difference of squares

x² -144

diff of squares factor easily

(x+12)(x-12)

x = -12, +12

Problem 4 use radical

(x-4)² = 25

√ √ square root each side

x-4  = + -  5

+ 4        + 4   add 4 to both sides

x  = + 5 + 4  and -5 +4

x = 9 and -1

Problem 5 factor

x² -16x + 64 = 0

what times to +64 and adds to -16? -8 and -8

x = 8

Part 2

Karen got the right answers but did so much more work than necessary.

on number one by dividing out the coefficient 2 you notice you have two squares so you can square root. On problem 2 you should always try factoring before completing the square of quadratic formula

Step-by-step explanation:

  • CIA(8 points)Jason Bourne has been held captive in a prison from which there are three possible routes to escape:an air duct, a sewer pipe and the door (which happens to be unlocked). The air duct leads him on athree hour trip whereupon he falls through a trap door onto his head. The sewer pipe is similar buttakes two hours to traverse. Each fall produces amnesia and he is returned to the cell immediatelyafter each fall. Assume that he always immediately chooses one of the three exits from the cell withprobability13. On average, how long does it take before he opens the unlocked door and escapes?9.Markov Chain(12 points: 4/3/5)Consider the Markov chainX(n)with the state diagram shown below, wherea,b∈(0,1).Figure 1: State diagram(a) Is this Markov chain irreducible? Please help

A) x= -4 and 4

B) x=4 and 6

C) x=2 and 8

D) no solution
Neporo4naja [7]

Answer:

No solutions

Step-by-step explanation:

|-2x-10| + 4 = 2

Subtract 4 from each side

|-2x-10| + 4-4 = 2-4

|-2x-10|  = -2

The absolute value is negative so there are no solutions.

Absolute values are always positive, so they cannot be negative.
