The effect of the Donner party is they stopped at a better location with grazing for cattle and shops for wagon repairs. While the main character of Marigolds thinks that destroying Miss Dottie’s marigolds symbolizes the antipathy, felt by the rest of her friends, to this lady; the main character of First love believes that the first empathy kiss received from an elder man means He is in love with her. The conflict of both stories is solved at the end, when the females regret the things they did during their childhood.
In Marigolds, she regrets her behavior, stating:

Sure enough, a military police truck drove up to their camp the following morning containing some recently captured prisoners, one of which was the last sniper. After inquiring about who the trumpet player was, he explained that the song made him think about his family back home in Germany, and he could not bring himself to fire after hearing it and gave himself up instead.
Music, it seems, can heal and inspire more than one type of mind wound. It strengthens the mind, inspires memories, and comforts the distressed.
