Population density is a measurement of population per land area.

\displaystyle \sf population \ density =\frac{population}{land \ area}

1. Determine the number of people in a given area. If you don’t know the number of people, you can consult the most current census data available.
2. Find the total area of the place. If the area of the city, county, state or country isn’t indicated in the census data, use Wikipedia or an encyclopedia to determine the surface area.
3.
Convert your data. If you need to compare one area against another, make sure your data uses a single unit of measurement. For instance, if one county is listed in square miles and another is listed in square km, you will need to convert both measurements to square miles (or km).
For easy standard to metric conversions, go to http://www.metric-conversions.org/.
4. Write the formula for population density on your paper. The formula is the number of people in the area divided by the area itself.
5. Input the data you’ve gathered into your formula. For example, if there are 145,000 people in City A, and it covers 9 square miles, then write 145,000/9 square miles.
6. Divide the numbers by hand or with your calculator. In our example, 145,000 divided by 9 would equal 16,111 people/square mile.
7. Repeat with data from other areas and make observations. For example, if the neighboring City B has 60,000 in 8 square miles, then its population density is 7,500/square mile. The population density of City A is far greater than the population density of City B.

The correct answer would be the second option. The correct plan for his experiment would be that the temperature, the type of limestone, and the type of acid are controls. The amount of acid and the amount of damage to the limestone are variables. To determine the degree of damage of the acid it would be best that the amount of acid is the manipulated variable while everything else are assumed constant.
