“In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression – everywhere in the world. The second is freedoms of every person to worship god in his own way – everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want…everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear…anywhere in the world. That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation.

— Franklin D. Roosevelt, January 6, 1941

2.04 Assignment: Coming to America
joja [24]

These are the ideas to be included in the paragraphs regarding the experiences of European and Asian immigrants in the United States during the Second Industrial Revolution.

  • The factors that led to migration during the Second Industrial Revolution were the following.
  • Poor and desperate European people and Asian people left their native countries.
  • They couldn't find the jobs needed in their countries and decided to risk everything to come to the United States.
  • There were many industries in the United States where technology and new machines in the fabrics demanded more hands and offered low-paid jobs.
  • These immigrants arrived and settled in the following places.
  • Asian immigrants arrived at Angel Island in San Francisco, California.
  • European immigrants entered through Ellis Island, in New York.
  • Most of the industries were located in large cities of the East Coast such as New York, Chicago, and Boston.
  • The jobs available were cheap paid jobs as workers in the fabrics to operate the machines in the manufacturing system.
  • These immigrants faced many difficulties.
  • They earned low wages, worked under difficult and unhealthy conditions, and worked many hours a day without a rest.
  • Immigrants lived in poor, overcrowded places, with no ventilation.
  • This created risk for the spread of diseases.

We conclude that during the Second Industrial Revolution, thousands of people arrived in the United States trying to get better living conditions for their families, working in the factories under poor health conditions and low salaries.
