Initially, every organism would eventually ignore any repeated stimulus that no longer relevant to our biological and psychological activities (such as the sound of the fan)

Assuming Judy is the host, she could be more or less permissive on the kind of party she was hosting, the age and background of the attendants, how close she was to Don, whether she smoked or not, and other factors. But, out of respect for non smoking guests I'm guessing she would ask Don to put out his cigarette before coming in, as it could bother other guests.
