What led to the diverse populations of New York and New Jersey?

Ellis Island is located right off of New York and is where the immigrants came in from other countries. It was where they were tested and made citizens if they passed the tests. Because it was so close to New York (and therefore close to New Jersey too), the many immigrants from all over the world chose to settle there.
