The pool itself, muddy and discolored from the sluice boxes, effectually hid what it contained, and it contained John Thornton; for Buck followed his trace into the water, from which no trace led away . How can you conclude that Skeet is a static character? She is faithful to the last. She is alone at the desolate camp. She is with Pete under the blankets. She is by the edge of the pool.

Twain uses irony and sarcasm to characterize the king and duke in such a way that communicates his belief that pretending to be something you are not (for the sake of appearances) is both ridiculous and embarrassing.
