Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electrons; in nature, this occurs with hydrogen,oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus as highly flexible single bonds capable of rotation; rigid, non-rotating  double; and very strong triple bonds. Carbon compounds form rings, and long branched chains- thus, carbon can form macromolecules in nature.
