Authors use characterization to support the theme in literature because it makes it easier for the reader to relate. The characterization of a character gives more background. Think about it this way. There are round characters and flat characters. Round characters are complex and developed, embodying a number of qualities and traits. Round characters  stand for ideas, such as the theme. Flat characters represent a single characterisitic, trait or idea.
