Characterization is used to show fictional characters of different personalities that occur with various facets. Based on the novel, everything that rises must fall, the author has used both direct and indirect characterization to illustrate and to bring out different themes of the story. For instance, Julian had an interest in befriending the right black friend, a friend that he would bring home since his mother had a symbolic strike. However, it turns out that Julian has his motives for making personal choices.
Direct characterization:<em><u> Everything that rises must converge.
</u></em>
<u>Direct characterization</u> occurs more frequently when the author specifically reveals the character traits to the reader. When the author or narrator explicitly declares something about the character, this is a direct characterization. Here, the reader can learn the thoughts, feelings, physical characteristics or motivations of a character.
Indirect characterization: <em>-</em><em><u> I saw him and he said: Hello, Everything that rises must converge.
</u></em>
<u>Indirect characterization</u> is when the reader indirectly learns about the character. The reader must infer or assume information about the character based on interactions that are not simple. For example, indirect characterization can be learned through: a character's dialogue, how others see them, their actions, how they treat others or their relationships, and how they treat themselves or see their general place in the world
