We could rewrite

2x + 3 = y

-4y + 8x = -12

as

2x - 1y = -3

8x - 4y = -12

We need to compare these two results. Do they represent the same equation or two different equations? Dividing the 2nd equation by 4 results in 2x - y = -3, which is indeed exactly the same as the first equation. Because of this, we have two straight lines that are superimposed; one lies right on top of the other. Thus, this system has an infinite number of solutions.

Marisol's bus ride home after work is 14 miles long. After she gets off the bus, Marisol walks 0.8 of a mile to her home. How fa
dem82 [27]

Answer:

14.8 miles

Step-by-step explanation:

Ok, so we know from the question that she already lives at least 14 miles away because the bus ride is 14 miles long. So, if she has to walk an extra 0.8 miles, you add them together to get 14.8 :)

use the differential equation given by dy/dx=xy/3, y > 0. Find the particular solution y = f(x) to the given differential equ
Ahat [919]
dy/dx=xy/3, y > 0 can be rewritten in terms of only one variable (x or y) each:

3 dy
----- = x*dx (first term is all in y; second term all in x).
  y
                                  x^2
Integrating, 3 ln y = ------- + ln C, Then ln y^3 = (1/2)x^2 + ln C.
                                     2

Combining the log terms:

ln y^3-ln C = (1/2)x^2.

Given: if x=0, y=4. Subst. these v alues into the equation in y given above:
                                                               4^3
ln 4^3 - ln C = (1/2)(0)^2 = 0. Then ln ------- = 0, which tells us that
                                                                 C

4^3 = C. Thus, the solution is ln y^3 = (1/2)x^2 + ln (4/3).

There are other ways in which you could write this same expression. You could, for example, solve for either y^3 or y alone.
