the challenges they faced included flooding, lack of water and food/starvation, mosquitoes spreading diseases, and the powhatan (native american) tribes had a hunting ground near the jamestown forts.

Once the conquered decided to accept their conquerors and started paying taxes and supplying soldiers, the Romans allowed them to maintain their beliefs, their local governments and their customs, giving them partial citenzenship and thus making them able to marry Romans and carry trade.
