Wegener’s evidence for continental drift was that the same types of fossilised animals and plants are found in South America and Africa; the shape of the east coast of South America fits the west coast of Africa, like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle and that matching rock formations and mountain chains are found in South America and Africa. Two reasons why some other scientists didn't believe his theories were that, although Wegener’s ideas could certainly explain similar fossils in different continents, other geologists thought that there were once ‘land bridges’ between continents, allowing animals to travel between them; and that Wegener was trained as an astronomer and a meteorologist and many geologists did not think that he had the right background to judge geological theories.
