Why might the Italian city-states have resisted the exploration around the world?

History

The Italian city-states resisted the exploration around the world because the technological innovations that allowed new discoveries were adding to the wealth of Italy's enemies.

Explanation:

The Italian city-states were powerful on a local level, but they were weak when compared to the larger nations of the western part of the continent. All of the city-states were small, and while they were rich, they didn't had enough military, nor enough funds to be competing with the large countries.

As the technology was developing, several countries of the western part of Europe started to explore and conquer the world. The countries that were doing this were:

  • Great Britain
  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • France
  • Netherlands etc.

While the Italian city-states wanted to engage in the explorations of the world, they feared because if they did so, they would have entered a conflict with much larger and stronger military forces. As the time was passing, the European imperial powers were having more and more colonies, accumulating more and more wealth, which in turn was making them more and more powerful living the Italian city-states way behind.
