In the given passage, we get an impression of what was it like during Alexander`s conquests. For his ambitions, 10 years was a too short period of time, but for his soldiers, it was like a whole lifetime. They were regular people who were just too exhausted and just wanted to go home for a while. Alexander was strict, so discipline in the army was on a high level, but in this case, he knew that this refusal to go further was not due to laziness or something similar. So he gave up the idea of conquering Asia and turned to his fleet commanded by a captain Naerchus who went further with exploring the coast of India.
