I would suggest the Ben Carson interview as a resource. The Encyclopedia Britannica is not constantly updated and this friend need to write an essay on a modern hero. The Encyclopedia gives facts about past heroes. Despite Carson's opinions and views, he has interviewed plenty of modern day heroes, and would be a good resource.
