"Fitting in" to a given environment is solely based on the societal norms that surround it. It can eventually develop into a handicap when certain scenarios lead an individual into behaving like their peers for recognition and acceptance. Though the welcoming feeling is always sought for, this could be avoided by establishing your own staple of conduct. Understanding yourself is most important; everyone else comes after. Search for like-minded people to express your interests with. This also applies to negative attention. It is best to alert someone of higher authority if you are typically attracting malicious intent so this issue can be resolved. In short, being a follower will likely cause you to feel miserable.
