The correct answer is C) the Crusaders attacked Constantinople.

The event that occurred in the 4th Crusade was the Crusaders attacked Constantinople.

The sack of Constantinopea took place in April 1204, during the 4th Crusade. The Crusaders attacked, destroyed and robbed during the assault of Constantinople. These actions were critiqued by Christians because they went against their moral principles. After all the struggle, Baldwin of Flanders was named Emperor, but the Byzantines refused to accept him and the territory was divided into four states in permanent conflict.

Further Explanations:

Fourth Crusade was a Latin Christian armed excursion called by Pope Innocent III. The motive of the excursion was to ruin the Muslim administered city of Jerusalem. Their strategy was to conquer the powerful “Egyptian Ayyubid sultanate”, the most powerful Muslim state at that time. Yet sequence of political and economic events ended up with invading of Constantinople, the capital city of the Greek Christian administered by the Byzantine Empire.

In 1202 the crusader’s monetarist issues led to sacking Zara annexed by them during Venetian control. When Pope heard this he expelled the crusader’s troop. Later in 1203 the troop allied with the Alexios Angelos, prince of Byzantine Empire and diverted their crusade towards Constantinople to restore his father. On 23rd June 1203, they reached Constantinople and continued their acre. After the clash Alexios was made the co-emperor.
