:A. many Europeans yearned for a strong force to unite them At that time, the presence of roman empire made European citizens who live under its territory felt protected from the invasion form outsiders. After the roman empire collapsed, barbarians and other empire started to target the area that previously protected by the roman empire. Which is why many of these people see the catholic church as a strong force that can unite them.
