One day, he was attacked and killed, turning Esperanza's world upside down. After her father's death, the tragedy, bad fortune that causes great sadness, continued when her house burned down and she had to move to California with her mother to get away from her mean uncles. Once in California, Esperanza dealt with poverty, having very little money and material things. When her mother got sick, Esperanza stepped up and got a job to pay for hospital bills and save for her grandmother's trip to California. In the end, she was able to find happiness again.
