For some constants a and b let \[f(x) = \left\{ \begin{array}{cl} 9 - 2x & \text{if } x \le 3, \\ ax + b & \text{if } x

> 3. \end{array} \right.\]The function f has the property that f(f(x)) = x for all x. What is a + b?

Answer:

The value of a+b is 4.

Step-by-step explanation:

The given function is

\[f(x) = \left\{ \begin{array}{cl} 9 - 2x & \text{if } x \le 3, \\ ax + b & \text{if } x > 3. \end{array} \right.\]

It is given that for some constants a and b the function f has the property that f(f(x))=x for all x.

For x≤3,

f(x)=9-2x

For x>3,

f(x)=ax+b

At x=0,

f(0)=9-2(0)=9

f(f(0))=f(9)\Rightarrow a(9)+b=9a+b

Using property f(f(x))=x,

f(f(0))=0

9a+b=0                     .... (1)

At x=1,

f(1)=9-2(1)=7

f(f(1))=f(7)\Rightarrow a(7)+b=7a+b

Using property f(f(x))=x,

f(f(1))=1

7a+b=1                     .... (2)

Subtract equation (2) from equation (1).

9a+b-(7a+b)=0-1

2a=-1

Divide both sides by 2.

a=-\frac{1}{2}

Substitute this value in equation (1).

9(-\frac{1}{2})+b=0

b=\frac{9}{2}

The value of a is -\frac{1}{2} and value of b is \frac{9}{2}. The value of a+b is

a+b=-\frac{1}{2}+\frac{9}{2}

a+b=4

Therefore the value of a+b is 4.

Suzie went to a candy shop. The candy shop has a sign that shows the cost of the candies at the shop. The sign is below:
aleksklad [387]

Answer:

$8.50

Step-by-step explanation:

Multiply the cost by the amount of candy she bought, your equation will look like this:

2(0.75) + 3(1) + 5(1.40)

Multiplying everything makes the equation into:

1.5 + 3 + 7

Adding everything makes the total cost 11.50.

Subtract 11.50 from 20, and the answer is 8.50

A bag contains 2 red marbles, 3 blue marbles and 5 green marbles. If two marbles are drawn out of the bag, what is the probabili
Cerrena [4.2K]

Hello there!

There are 10 marbles and 2 of them are red. First pick is 2/10 to get a red and then if you pick a red marble then you have a 1/9 chance to pick a red.

So, 2/10 x 1/9 = 2/90

Simplify 2/90 to get 1/45.

Convert 1/45 to a decimal.

1/45 : 0.022222

Therefore, the probability to the nearest 10th of a percent that both marbles drawn will be red is 0.02%
