One visual characteristic of the cord is it having two colors, white and gray. The white matter surrounds the gray matter. The reason for this white color in the white matter, which is really the connecting filaments that go up and down the CNS, and connect with the gray matter, is that white matter neurons and axons are covered by myelin, an insulating and cushioning covering that surrounds the cell´s axons and also helps the nerve impulses move much faster and with higher precision, than in the white matter.
