Unfortunately this attitude can be seen in Jim when he is confronted by his wife´s Jane´s friends, and he explains to them why his wife is drinking so much. By doing this, Jim is showing that he does know about the problem, he understands there is a reason to be worried, but he has already given the problem a label and he has literally given the problem an explanation that, even if not the correct one, to him makes sense. Instead of taking steps, and seeking to help his wife, Jim has accepted the situation and explained it by taking the circumstances around Jane as excuses for a behavior that should be corrected. This process is known as rationalization and accepting. Jim will not do anything to help Jane correct the behavior.
