chromosomes are thread-like structures in which DNA is tightly packed within the nucleus. the DNA is usually tightly coiled around a protein that supports the structure which are called DNA and histone. when the cell is not dividing, the chromosome is not visible under the microscope, but during cell division the DNA that makes up the chromosome becomes tightly packed, then the chromosome becomes visible under the microscope. therefore chromosomes are composed of DNA.
