Which narrative element is used in this excerpt from Theodore Dreiser’s short story “Peter”? On Monday, the day he saw me, he wa

s well. On Tuesday morning he had a slight cold but insisted on running out somewhere without his overcoat, against which his wife protested. Tuesday night he had a fever and took quinine and aspirin and a hot whiskey.
Wednesday morning he was worse and a doctor was called, but it was not deemed serious. Wednesday night he was still worse and pneumonia had set in. Thursday he was lower still, and by noon a metal syphon of oxygen was sent for, to relieve the sense of suffocation setting in. Thursday night he was weak and sinking, but expected to come round—and still, so unexpected was the attack, so uncertain the probability of anything fatal, that no word was sent, even to me. Friday morning he was no worse and no better. "If he was no worse by night he might pull through." At noon he was seized with a sudden sinking spell. Oxygen was applied by his wife and a nurse, and the doctor sent for. By one-thirty he was lower still, very low. "His face was blue, his lips ashen," his wife told me. "We put the oxygen tube to his mouth and I said 'Can you speak, Peter?' I was so nervous and frightened. He moved his head a little to indicate 'no.' 'Peter,' I said, 'you mustn't let go! You must fight! Think of me! Think of the babies!' I was a little crazy, I think, with fear. He looked at me very fixedly. He stiffened and gritted his teeth in a great effort. Then suddenly he collapsed and lay still. He was dead." A.This excerpt shows the writer’s use of figurative language to hold the reader’s attention.
B.This excerpt shows how the writer develops Peter's character.
C.This excerpt shows how the writer is trying to pace the story through flashbacks.
D.This excerpt shows how the writer is trying to develop a specific conflict.

History is by far my favorite subject in school. It is challenging learning new information. So, the challenge is well worth it for several reasons. First, it's great to learn about inspirational figures from the past. Today we learned about Abraham Lincoln, who guided America through the Civil War. Second, I get to see how the past has influenced our lives today. Therefore history helps us all learn to not make the same mistakes that were made in the past. Lastly history helps us grow and learn. There are just three of the reasons I can't wait for for history class.

Varvara68 [4.7K]

The sentence that most reflects Frankenstein's creature's feelings regarding the reaction of people around him is the following: "The monster asks Frankenstein to create a companion creature for him, so he won’t feel so lonely in the world." By the time the crature requests that a companion be created for him, he has experienced rejection by the family in the cottage, to whom he had been kind, as well as that of his own creator; he knows that only another creature like himself will be capable of accepting him.
