<em>"The First Seven Years" </em>is a short story written by American novelist Bernard Malamud written in 1950 and first published in 1958. It tells the story of a Jewish shoemaker named Fed who is looking for a decent husband for his daughter Miriam, but she is not interested in his choice which is a young man called Max who is a college student. Indeed she is in love with her dad's assistant, Sobel who is a polish refugee.

In literary definition, an inciting moment is the event that hooks the reader to the story line. It the moment in which the reader gets the main idea on which the story will develop upon. The inciting incident in "The First Seven Years" is when Max enters Fed's shoe store in order to get one of his own shoe's repaired. That is when Fed shows a picture of Miriam to him in an attempt to set the two of them up for a date.

A paradox exists when a seemingly contradictory statement is given that, upon closer examination, reveals a compelling truth. (P
Travka [436]

Answer:

The line that includes paradox in 'Breakeven' is in line "Just prayed to a God that I don’t believe in" and in the poem by Edmund in "My Love is like to ice, and I to fire."

Explanation:

The paradox is a literary device that is used to create or present a contradiction between two ideas or thoughts or objects.

'Breakeven' is a song written by a rock band named The Script. The paradox that can be found in the lyrics is in the second line of the song which says that the speaker prayed to God in whom he did not believe. It is paradox because it is creating the contradictory thoughts of the speaker praying to someone whom he does not believe leads people to think of what the speaker must be praying about to God. Moreover, if he does not have faith in God than what is he hoping for from Him?

In Sonnet 30 of Edmund Spenser, the contradictory thoughts are revealed in the first line of the poem which says that the lover of the poet is like an ice and the speaker like a fire. Ice and fire are both contradictory, thus creating a paradox. This paradox has been discussed throughout the sonnet showing the difference between the feelings of the poet and his lover. The speaker says that his 'hot desires' could not melt his lover's 'cold heart.' The poem is talking about one sided-love of the speaker.

Answer:

In the two stories there are four main differences and similarities for the first example there is the Wall which comes from “Pyramus and Thisbe” and there are the rival families which come from Romeo and Juliet. The wall in "Pyramus and Thisbe" represents the differences in their families that keep them apart. This can be compared to the feud between the Montague and Capulet families which kept Romeo and Juliet apart. This feud kept them apart just as the wall keeps “Pyramus and Thisbe” apart. Ovid described the wall as, "The hateful wall that separated them..."  (947).  The Prince said, "The fire of your pernicious rage", referring to the conflicts between the Capulet and Montague families (1.1.80). This is the first example of the…show more content…

In Romeo and Juliet, both sides of the family don't want their child to marry the person that they want to marry. Both Parents forbade their children's marriage in "Pyramus and Thisbe" as well.
