Many individuals have been to a corner market in a city and noticed soggy lettuce, a moldy cucumber or other far from fresh prod

uce being offered to that community in that specific area. Until now, many may not have known that this is what is referred to as a Food Desert. Why is it that we do not see similar grocery stores in these areas as we do in more rural communities? As a result, what does this do to the health and well-being of the thousands of people living in that community? Discuss Food Deserts in this Discussion Thread focusing on why they exist in the first place and how we can improve the situation for generations to come.

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

Why is it that we do not see similar grocery stores in these areas as we do in more rural communities?

Because in modern and larger cities, supermarkets have a strict quality control system to take care of the food and always offer healthy food choices to consumers. The Federal and Drug Administration (FDA) is very strict about this issue.

As a result, what does this do to the health and well-being of the thousands of people living in that community?

These people who live in rural America have major health risks due to the condition and quality of the food they eat.

Food Deserts are considered places where poor people do not so many options about the kind of food they get and the quality of the food. They exist in the first place because poor people do not have the means to get a variety of nutritious food for their families. We can improve the situation for generations to come creating the kind of programs that allow all the people to get access to nutritious food at affordable prices, under the healthy conditions needed to keep the food safe and free of germs.
