The Ottoman capture of Constantinople contributed to the age of exploration because since the majority of spices came from the Orient and Constantinople was one of the few access points from Europe to the east that was under christian control. When the Muslim Ottomans took Constantinople they charged heavy taxes on Christian merchants bringing spices through Constantinople. So a new route to the Orient was needed and thus the age of exploration began   <span />
