The correct answer is D.)

Lincoln did not at the time think he would advocate for the abolishment of slavery but did not want it to spread any farther. Douglas on the other hand though that it would be best to leave it up to the states to decide for themselves about slavery.

Hope this helps!

Correct answer:  D. Lincoln believed slavery should not spread, while Douglas believed each state should decide the matter for itself.

History/context:

Senator Stephen Douglas proposed a bill in Congress in 1854 that became the Kansas-Nebraska Act.  The Kansas-Nebraska Act granted popular sovereignty to the people in the Kansas and Nebraska territories as they would enter the Union as states, letting them decide whether they'd allow slavery.  In essence, this made the Kansas-Nebraska act a repeal of the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which had said there would be no slavery north of latitude 36°30´ except for Missouri.  Douglas' support for the Kansas-Nebraska Act was indicative of his approach on the issue of slavery.

In a speech Lincoln gave during the 1858 campaign for the US Senate, challenging Illinois' incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, Lincoln had said of slavery, "Although volume upon volume is written to prove slavery a very good thing, we never hear of the man who wishes to take the good of it, by being a slave himself."  Lincoln was morally opposed to slavery, but he also recognized that slavery was permitted by the existing law of the land, the US Constitution.  So Lincoln's initial position on slavery was to stop the spread of it.

Lincoln  did not manage to unseat Stephen Douglas from his seat in the Senate in 1858.  However, Lincoln did succeed in winning election as President in 1860.  When Lincoln was elected, states in the South moved to secede from the Union, which brought about the Civil War.

The progress of the Civil War made Lincoln increasingly strong in his stance against slavery.  The war initially was about preserving the Union, but later, with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (1863), was declared also to be about ending slavery.

Anyone that has an idea?
stira [4]

1. "The study of movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another."

ex: "Movement also deals with how and why people travel from one place to another. Some people travel for career, others to be close to family, and some move to escape war or religious persecution. One example of movement was pioneers heading West on the Oregon Trail in hopes of finding cheap, fertile land in Oregon."

2. "How humans and the environment affect each other."

ex: "Geographers study the way humans interact positively and negatively with their environments. They also study the lasting affects these interactions may have on a place. Some examples of this geography theme are damming a river, polluting the air, building highways or railroads, and even watering lawns and gardens. Human behavior such as planting trees is a positive interaction with the environment where creating landfills is a negative interaction."
