A historian would first look at the reliability of a source - when it was published and what was happening at the time (context), who wrote it and their qualifications, any bias the author may hold, whether author sources corroborate the source, whether the author has used references, whether the source provides evidence, who the source is representative of and whether the source provides a balanced perspective
I was not well with this case. Although I understood that students have the right to speak, I think it's also important to avoid the chaos in the student's life. I think school does is gently protecting the rights of these students representing the majority. If I understand that newspapers are a source reports that everyone has the right but I think this is a school setting and the office has the right to fix the document if necessary.

In many other countries, particularly Mexico and other Latin American countries as well as some European countries and most countries with a socialist history, the kids grow up learning about this in school curriculum. The Chinese, however, have at least as sordid experience in historical revisionism as the US does.
