Describe why the "discovery" of America was one of the "most important events in the history of mankind," according to Adam smith.

Because Christopher Columbus supposedly discovered America, even though Native American's were already living on America.  Apparently, the "discovery" of America was important because it helped American's establish their own country away from the British.  Does this make enough sense?
