The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides that "the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation."

The fourth amendment protects people and their belongings from "unreasonable searches and seizures". Under the fourth amendment, the police must show a judge the there is a good reason for allowing the action before arresting a person or searching someone's home. The fourth amendment protects the right to be left alone - the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men.
