The reason federalists supported a strong national government is when Alexander Hamilton was made the secretary of treasury when he was funding a debt that was occuring he could create a split in the original federalist form of government. It became very popular with New Englanders and republicans that were mostly farmers that opposed of a strong government.
The loyalists supported the British because they thought that the underlying grievances of the "patriots" against the British, such as taxation without representation were unfounded and exaggerated. Loyalists were happy with the status quo.
