The Republican Party first came to power in Abraham´s Lincoln election in 1860 ( 2nd option is correct ). Founded in 1854, the Republican Party soon transformed itself in the main opposition to the then dominating Democratic Party. In the election of 1860 the Republicans won control of both houses of the Congress.
