How does the Rectangle function in "In His Steps?."

Within the novel, _In His Steps_, which was written by Charles Sheldon, we see a lot of religious imagery and religious symbolism as well as religious messages.  One of the messages that _In His Steps_ conveys is that everyone should have the opportunity to be ministered to.  The Rectangle within this novel is a place where those who are homeless and on the streets can go to be ministered to.
